One of the "founding fathers" of the United States, John Adams, is credited with the pithy expression of a fundamental value of Western civilisation viz.[We shall have]"a government of laws, not men".

This declaration of principle is not a power-grab by lawyers. It is an affirmation that those who exercise power over us are not free to do entirely as they wish - that would be tyranny - but are subject to limits set by law.

A government of laws not men is another way of expressing the concept of the rule of law. The alternative to this is to have our lives dominated by those whose only claim to obedience is their possession of "a bigger stick".

No, we have not completely avoided that fate, but let us not abandon the ambition to the more civilised arrangement

The title that I have given this website is intended to echo Adams' hallowed phrase, and also to signify that not only law, but some other matters of interest to, and concerning, men and women*, will be covered here.

Note that the site is configured so that you can add it to your RSS feeds.

All new material added will be noted by an entry on the Journal page so that would perhaps be a good place to start exploring.

I would also refer you to the Editorial Guide page.

* As to this, I would refer readers to The Interpretation Act, 2005, section 18(b).
